Prior to co-founding Lumin Eye Specialists, Dr Don Pek was the Surgical Director (Ophthalmology) of Ang Mo Kio Specialists Centre and a Senior Consultant in the Anterior Segment & Cataract Service in Tan Tock Seng Hospital. He started his medical training in Glasgow medical school, Scotland, and received first class honours in the Bachelor of Medical Science before returning to Singapore to complete his training in Ophthalmology.

As someone who strives to help others improve their quality of life, he regularly volunteers to deliver free eye care to countries such as India & Myanmar and is proactive in projects to transform healthcare.

Dr Clarissa Cheng is the co-founder of Lumin Eye Specialists. She has more than 15 years’ experience in managing cataract and diseases of the retina. She has a stellar academic record graduating medical school at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry with distinction, receiving gold medal for the MOH specialists board examinations, and completing further sub-specialty training at the renowned Manchester Royal Eye Hospital.

She was a consultant at Tan Tock Seng Hospital and visiting consultant to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital and Woodlands Health Campus. She is passionate about educating the next generation of doctors and was a clinical teacher and content expert for both Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine and Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine.

Is cataract surgery painful or scary?

No they are not.

Cataract surgeries are generally painless with most people feeling no or minimal discomfort during surgery.

At Lumin Eye Specialists, we are dedicated in our care and ensuring a comfortable experience. Effective anaesthesia the form of numbing eye drops, small injection around the eye, sedation or general anaesthesia may be given depending on your needs. There is minimal downtime after the surgery.

Do cataracts return after surgery?

Cataracts do not return after surgery. However, some patients may experience progressive cloudiness of the lens months to years after the surgery, affecting their vision. This is called posterior capsular opacity and the treatment is a simple laser cleaning procedure known as YAG capsulotomy. This procedure is painless and does not require a surgery.

Is cataract surgery Medisave and Insurance claimable?

Singaporeans and Permanent residents can use $2,450 of their own Medisave, or their immediate family member’s Medisave, to offset the cost of surgery. For insurance policy holders, the amount claimable will depend on your policy. At Lumin Eye Specialist, our team will guide you through the claims process.
