About Dr Clarissa Cheng
Senior Consultant Ophthalmologist
Dr Clarissa Cheng is a Senior Consultant Ophthalmologist with more than 15 years of experience in Ophthalmology, having trained and worked in Singapore and the United Kingdom. She specialises in medical and surgical retina, with particular expertise in retinal detachment, macular holes, epiretinal membrane treatment, and complications of cataract and myopia.
Dr Clarissa Cheng graduated top of her class from St Bartholomew’s and The Royal London hospitals in 2007, receiving her MBBS with Distinction. During her Ophthalmology training in Singapore, she was recipient of the Gold Medal award for the MOH specialists board examination in 2015 and was then awarded by Tan Tock Seng Hospital to undergo further subspeciality fellowship at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital in 2018.
With over 15 years of clinical experience, Dr Cheng is experienced in providing retinal treatment tailored to the complexity and nature of each case. Her approach combines evidence-based care with tailored surgical treatment options.

About Dr Don Pek
Dr Don Pek
Senior Consultant Ophthalmologist

Prior to co-founding Lumin Eye Specialists, Dr Don Pek was the Surgical Director (Ophthalmology) of Ang Mo Kio Specialists Centre and a Senior Consultant in the Anterior Segment & Cataract Service in Tan Tock Seng Hospital. He started his medical training in Glasgow medical school, Scotland. He received first class honours in the Bachelor of Medical Science before returning to Singapore to complete his training in Ophthalmology.
Dr Pek completed a clinical fellowship in Canada, where he trained in anterior segment and cataract subspecialties. While his core expertise lies in cataract and complex anterior segment surgery, he works closely with his team to provide comprehensive care for patients with retinal conditions.

Is retinal detachment surgery painful or scary?
Patients are given appropriate anesthesia during the procedure to ensure maximal comfort. The type of anesthesia used is typically general anesthesia, but the surgery can be performed under sedation. Your surgeon will discuss the anesthesia used based on the complexity, medical issues, and patient’s preference. There is typically minimal downtime after the surgery.
Do I need to stay in the hospital after surgery?
Retinal detachment surgeries can be performed as day surgery. However, depending on the urgency and complexity of the case, a short hospital stay may be recommended. Your surgeon will advise you on the most suitable option during your consultation.
Is retinal detachment surgery Medisave and Insurance claimable?
Retinal detachment surgery is Medisave claimable; the amount that can be claimed will follow MOH guidelines. Insurance coverage may also be available depending on your specific plan. Our staff can provide information and assistance with Medisave and insurance claims processing.
